Four key actions the Irish government can take to strengthen disability rights during its Security Council tenure

On February 17th 2021, Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs hosts its annual Civil Society Forum - Protecting human rights in conflict and the role of the UN Security Council. This year, the Civil Society Forum provides an opportunity for NGOs to dialogue with Irish officials on the contributions the Irish Government can make during its Security Council tenure to shape a better world, one that respects human rights, upholds the dignity and safety of all people and promotes a just world including persons with disabilities.

VIVID: An Update on our Projects

Since our first consortium meeting in March, the consortium has partaken in two further activities. Firstly, the partners undertook an assessment process to identify which gaps they need to fill in order to guide their future learning in accessibility, humanitarian action and volunteer management. They were prompted to stimulate inclusive dialogues with staff members not directly involved in their programme or project work. Following their assessment each partner created an action plan which identified possible strategies to build their capacity in these three key areas.

The Global Response to Climate Change must be Disability Inclusive

On June 30th, CBM Ireland will launch a short research working paper on how climate change has impacted persons with disabilities. Through a small scale survey and interviews with persons with disabilities and organisations representing persons with disabilities, the short paper explores and analyses how climate change impacts on the lives of persons with disabilities from four different perspectives – personal, programme, policy and political.

Safeguarding children and adults-at-risk

On the first page of CBM’s Safeguarding policy1 you can read, “CBM believes that every child and adult has the right to protection and to live in ‘safe environments’, regardless of gender, ethnicity, political association, religion, sexual orientation and whether or not they have a disability. It is CBM’s responsibility to make sure that all children and adults who come into contact with CBM’s development and humanitarian programming are safeguarded to the greatest extent possible.”
