This Christmas, you can give the Gift of Sight to a child like Mitchelle

Five-year-old Mitchelle from Uganda adores her siblings. Nothing makes her happier than playing with her brother and sister on the front porch. She looks up to them and wants to do everything they do. Though this often isn’t possible.

When Mitchelle was two, her mother, Barbra, realised something was wrong: Mitchelle was going blind.

Mitchelle loves to learn, but that growing enjoyment of books and the classroom was cut short when the cloudy film of cataracts began to cover her eyes. Reading the blackboard is a struggle. She couldn’t make out the letters on the pages of her school book and had to bring the book within centimetres of her face to see it.

“I want to be able to see like my sister,” Mitchelle tells CBM.

Life is tough for the family. Although Barbra earns a wage, she supports the children alone, and there is nothing left at the end of the month after paying for school fees, food and rent.

Over 18,000 children in Uganda are living with blindness unnecessarily. If caught in time, cataracts can be corrected. Children like Mitchelle can get their eyesight back.

This poor vision has robbed Mitchelle of happiness. If I do not get anyone to help right now, I think Mitchelle will soon become totally blind and she will remain dependent on others for survival. I am helpless and can only wait for God to answer my prayers.

With your help, we can not only fund life-changing treatment, but also train health workers, and equip hospitals to strengthen eye healthcare, bringing eye health services closer to communities to ensure that nobody is left behind.

Together we can help more people access sight-saving surgery, glasses and support so they can go to school, read and write, get around safely and support themselves and their families.

If Mitchelle gets surgery to save her sight, she can go back to school. And that’s really all she wants.

This Christmas, you can give the Gift of Sight to a child like Mitchelle. Make this the brightest Christmas imaginable.
