Kenya Food Crisis

Emergency Appeal

Give today to provide urgent support to the most vulnerable people in Kenya experiencing severe drought and food shortages.

• €37 could help people to buy food

• €88 to help pay for the costs of a wheelchair or walking aid so that people can access support

• €175 could enable people to access clean water

People in Kenya are facing severe drought and food shortages. Families are on the verge of starvation, with people with disabilities among those most vulnerable. People in Kenya are paying the devastating price for a climate crisis they have done nothing to create.

Your urgent support is needed to help the most vulnerable people survive and rebuild their lives.

The situation for people with disabilities

An urgent need for greater support, specifically food relief, water as well as access to assistive devices to help them move to search for food, water and other essential items. More people living with a disability are registering for the National Disability Card, that potentially gives them access to some government-led stipend, although some are saying they’re aren’t getting any support.

It is estimated that approximately 2,750 households in Tharaka Nithi county and about 9,000 households in Meru County are currently impacted by the ongoing drought. Access to food and water, either directly or through cash transfers is essential.

Across both counties, people with disabilities, the elderly, widows, single parent or child headed households are at risk. They are most likely to be seriously affected by increasing food prices and the decreasing variety and availability of food and water. Undernutrition, a pre-existing issue in both counties, is now further exacerbated by the current conditions.

I have travelled around the country in the past few weeks, visiting communities affected by the draught. Most of the farmers I met were unable to sow crops, and the few who have, are seeing them fail.

People are already dying and if the world continues to ignore this ‘invisible crisis’, many more will lose their lives
