Kenya faces its worst drought for more than a decade

Northern KenyaAlmost unnoticed by the international media, an emergency is quietly and tragically unfolding in Northern Kenya. Famine is now following in the footsteps of two years of drought, years when the rains simply never came.

Wells have dried up. Nothing grows. People, whose existence depends on cattle and goats, have lost their livestock to starvation. Without the help of agencies like CBM, and caring donors like you… disaster awaits.

Here is an excerpt from a recent emergency e-mail. It was sent to our national director from Ben Gobin, one of our Programme Managers on the ground in Samburu, whose team is in the field as we speak, acting to avert an impending disaster:

…the drought has caused soaring prices for both food and water, bringing even greater poverty to people who have already lost everything. The rate of child mortality is rising too. Our programme has already reported 22 deaths of children with disabilities due to a lack of nutritional needs.
