Eye Care

Child with Cataracts

To carry out the much needed consultations and treatments to combat blindness, CBM provides hospitals and department buildings as well as equipment to screen and treat patients. For example, at the Basic Eye Care Services project in Uzbekistan Hospital they now have the expertise and the human capacities to offer high quality services.

However, the hospital lacks both the medical equipment and consumables to fulfil its full potential. With CBM's support, the hospital aims to improve the quality and quantity of the medical service. At another of the CBM projects in Brazil, we provide equipment to the Fundacao Altino Ventura. This means the centre can treat cases of retinopathy in low weight and pre-term babies with a diode laser.

The programme in the Central African Republic distributes Mectizan® to all people at risk of river blindness. This programme has been very successful despite the very rural nature of the population and continues in spite of political disturbances. It combines Mectizan® distribution with vitamin A distribution. In Ecuador, cataracts cause many problems so the Proyecto 'Volver A Ver' project focuses on detecting, referring and performing cataract operations.
